Renault 5: The Highly Anticipated European Electric Model Unveiled at Geneva Motor Show

Renault presented at the Geneva Motor Show one of the most anticipated European electric models, a small class car that has not changed much compared to the concept car version presented in 2021. Renault 5 will arrive in the fall to customers in Romania, the starting price in Europe is 25,000 euros, and the car will have a version with 300 km of autonomy and a more expensive one with 400 km of autonomy.

Renault 5 is part of a so-called retro-futuristic current in the automotive industry, the idea being to launch models inspired by the design of cars that were successful a few decades ago. These cars also have retro design elements, but they also have a lot of modern technology and are generally full-electric.

The French group has now presented the series version of the electric Renault 5 E-Tech which, a rarity in the automotive industry, differs very little from the concept. The Renault 5 is a full-electric car produced in Europe (not in China like many other models) and the starting price from 25,000 euros, which should make it attractive, especially since in many countries subsidies are also given. The variant with the most powerful engine and larger battery will most likely cost over 30,000 euros.

There are still few electric cars that cost under 30,000 euros, but a “holy grail” is to launch B-class cars that cost from under 25,000 euros and mini-class cars that cost from under 20,000 euros. Renault will launch the New Twingo EV, which should cost from 20,000 euros.

The Renault 5 is 13 cm shorter than the Clio and 30 cm longer than the current Twingo EV. There will be two battery versions: 40 kWh and 52 kWh and the promised range is between 300 and 400 km. It is 3.92 meters long and the company says that the interior space is comparable to that of the Clio.

There will be three engine versions (70 and 90 kW (95 or 120 HP for the version with 40 kWh battery and 110 kW (150 HP) for the version with 52 kWh battery. In the most powerful version the maximum speed is 150 km/h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is in 8 seconds.

The interior has a lot of technology, and the company says that it tried not to have many dark elements. There is also a central 10-inch multimedia screen on board

Renault 5 is a beautiful car that comes in bright colors. Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s chief designer, said in discussions with the Romanian press at the Auto Show that the Renault 5 is a car that suits colors like yellow or light green. “It’s a car you buy with your heart, not your mind. It’s a car that puts a smile on your face,” said the chief designer. Renault describes the colors as “iconic and bright”.

Rarely has a car company been so proud of a new product as Renault is with the R5. The company has communicated a lot about this car and has high commercial expectations.

The model is produced in France and will increase the share of components produced in Hexagon.

Among the competitors in the market will be models such as electric ones from Mini and the Fiat 500.

The Renault R5 was produced between 1973 and 1983 and sold 5.5 million units.
