Renaming the Motherland Monument: A Step Towards Decommunization in Ukraine

“We had a meeting of the academic council of our museum, and important decisions were made at it. One of them is the renaming of the Motherland monument into the Motherland monument,” Savchuk said, adding that there is everything for this decision grounds.

The director of the museum hopes that the final decision on renaming the monument to “Mother Ukraine” will be made by the Independence Day of Ukraine, that is, before August 24.

“There should be an appropriate administrative act, which is the order of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. I approved a schedule of necessary actions to achieve this goal on the eve of Independence Day,” he said.

Decommunization of the Motherland

Recall, first at the monument “Motherland” in Kyiv, they decided to change the coat of arms on the shield. Now the coat of arms of the Soviet Union is located there, since the monument was erected during the Soviet era. However, after the dismantling of Soviet symbols, the State Emblem of Ukraine – the Trident – will be installed on the monument.

As RBC-Ukraine wrote, work has already begun in Kyiv to dismantle the Soviet coat of arms and renovate the Motherland monument.
