R the leadership of the Ministry of Health decided UMBAL “St. Ekaterina” to be renamed after Prof. Dr. Alexander Chirkov.

The proposal was made by an Initiative Committee, which includes patients, students, colleagues and followers of Prof. Chirkov.

They propose that a street in Sofia be named after Prof. Chirkov

Among the motives of the initiators is to honor Prof. Chirkov’s contribution both to saving the lives and health of thousands of Bulgarians and to the creation of the Bulgarian school of cardiac surgery and cardiology.

In 1984, Prof. Chirkov was commissioned to build a modern cardiac surgery in Bulgaria. On May 14, 1986, the first heart transplant in Eastern Europe was performed there, and in 1994, the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery was established, headed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Chirkov.

For many years UMBAL “St. Ekaterina” was known among the Bulgarian society as the “Church Hospital”.
