Books – Muhammad Shaker:
Dr. Abbas Sharaqi, Professor of Water Resources at Cairo University, said in a post on the social networking site Facebook: The flow of water has stopped above the middle corridor of the Renaissance Dam, and the fourth storage of about 24 billion cubic meters, and a total of 41 billion cubic meters, ended on the ninth of last September.
He added: Since that date, water has been flowing up the middle corridor, and the continued flow for more than a month and a half despite the opening of the two drainage gates on October 31, November 8 of last year, is due to the increase in the surface of the lake to more than 1,000 km2, and the average amount of water that reaches the Renaissance Dam. From Lake Tana and from the drainage of valleys in the Blue Nile Basin during December, about 42 million m3/day.
He continued: The water has stopped, but the surface of the middle corridor is saturated with water and needs several days to dry, possibly up to several weeks, to begin concrete work to reach its final level of 640 meters above sea level, with a total storage of 64 billion cubic metres. It is also expected that one of the two drainage gates will be closed in the coming days and only one will be sufficient to pass about 25 million m3/day during the month of next January.
He continued: It is also expected that all concrete work on the Renaissance Dam will be completed in the coming months, but the work of the remaining eleven turbines may take a year or two to install and operate.
He continued: Tomorrow, Saturday, December 16, 2023, the work of the fourth and final meeting will begin in Addis Ababa to resume negotiations in accordance with the agreed upon program to reach an agreement within four months of last June 13, which extended for more than a month.
He concluded by saying: The previous three meetings were unable to achieve any progress, but according to Egyptian statements, there is a decline in the Ethiopian position.
