COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Renovating a kitchen or bathroom during a pandemic has its unique challenges: waiting six to eight months for appliances, scarce resources and skyrocketing costs.
But home prices are also rising, allowing homeowners to gain equity and create space that meets their needs.
In Upper Arlington, a family from Andover Road decided to expand their kitchen to accommodate a chef, the owner of the house.

“We actually took an old kitchen that was really small and compact, and combined it with the old dining room that was rarely used,” says Bryce Jacob, Element One, the home contractor.
“We took out a wall… extended the kitchen to this area… there was an old peninsula, a few small chairs in the back. It really wasn’t very functional.
There is currently a waiting period of six to eight months for the devices. “A kitchen remodel won’t take six to eight months if you do it right, and it’s not the whole house you’re renovating at the same time,” Jacob said. “So you really have to plan or postpone the start of your construction project. “

A kitchen remodel like this costs between $ 125,000 and $ 175,000 – and the costs are going up.
“If you open walls, redo floors, install custom cabinetry, solid surface countertops, whether it’s Cambria quartz, granite or concrete, and that adds up to the cost because they are products of luxury, ”said Jacob.
Ways to pay the cost include savings, equity lines of credit, or construction loans with a post-completion appraisal.
