His music career starts with a “happy ending”: Matthias Fleckenstein (35) aka “Crystal Rock” is in the German airplay charts with this cover version. We spoke to the DJ and remixer from Seelhorst about records and cover songs – and about the flippers.
Hannover. When Mathias Fleckenstein talks about records, his voice sounds reverent. Sentences like “Music is something you can touch” or “You can tell from the grooves on the vinyl whether there is singing or a beat” would be attributed to someone from the baby boomer generation, but Fleckenstein is not in his mid-sixties, just 35 years old old, DJ and remixer. And under the name “Crystal Rock” a size in the industry.
His career is the opposite of his analogue record passion, Fleckenstein (whom his friends call Matze) is in the digital business with his cover versions and remixes: his version of “Astronaut in the Ocean” by Masked Wolf (aka Harry Michael, 31) streamed on Spotify. “I have 2.6 million listeners on the portal every month, I’m number 25 of the most frequently streamed German house artists,” says the man, who has just moved into a home in Seelhorst with his family, proudly. That’s why he dared to change course in his mid-30s.
