The US actor Alan Arkin is dead. He died at the age of 89, numerous US media reported, citing a message from his three sons. Arkin was best known for his role as Grandfather Edwin in the hit film Little Miss Sunshine, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

“Our father was an exceptionally talented force of nature, both as an artist and as a man. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was loved and will be greatly missed,” Arkin’s sons shared.

Born in New York in 1934, Arkin actually wanted to be a musician after school and had his first successes, but then turned to acting and got roles in theaters and films. Among other things, he starred in “Wait Until Dark”, “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” and “Catch-22 – The Wicked Trick”. Arkin has also worked as a director and author of children’s books.
