September 7, 2011 was a terrible day for the hockey world. News came from Russia that a Yak-42 plane carrying players, coaches and staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed just after takeoff at Tunošňa airport. Slovak hockey player Pavol Demitra († 36) also sat in itwho only recently said goodbye to the national team, or three Czech players Jan Marek († 31), Josef Vašíček († 30) and Karel Rachůnek († 32).
The accident happened at 16:00 Moscow time (14:00 CET), when the team was heading for a match in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. There were 45 passengers on board, including the crew, 43 of them died on the spot, the attacker Galimov died later in the hospital.
Only one person survived the fatal crash. The team was aviation maintenance engineer Alexander Sizov. A detailed investigation later revealed both pilot and airline misconduct.
12 years have passed since the accident that shook the entire hockey world. The great hockey player’s departure was the hardest for his family, especially his wife Majka (46) and their two children. For many years, the widow of Demitr appeared in public only sporadically and devoted her energy to her son Lucas and daughter Zara, studying psychology and writing books.
“I don’t want to dwell on the past anymore, it should be left alone. It’s been ten years. I live with children, and do I have anyone? I don’t want to talk about my privacy,” she said in an interview for Madam Eva magazine in August 2021.

Participant of the overseas NHL St. On January 19, 2024, Louis Blues will induct former Slovak hockey player Pavel Demitra into the club’s hall of fame. Together with him, Keith Tkachuk and Mike Liut will also enter it. Tkachuk and Liut together with Demitr’s wife Maja will attend the gala dinner on January 19. A day later, the club will honor all three players before a home game against the Washington Capitals.
Demitra played 494 matches in the overseas team, in which he scored 204 goals and 289 assists. He played in the Blues jersey from November 1996 to the 2003/04 season. He represented the club’s colors three times in the all-star game. He still ranks seventh in team scoring and eighth in scoring. During his time at the club, he also won the Lady Byng Trophy for the most decent player of the 1999/2000 season.
