Remembering the Political Life and Legacy of General and Municipal Councilor Alfred Sinosa

The death of the former general and municipal councilor was announced by his relatives this Monday, September 25, 2023. He was 89 years old. He had devoted a quarter of a century to the political life of his city and his country.

Deputy mayor of Lamentin in 1989 and general councilor of the first canton of Lamentin in 2002, Alfred Sinosa was responsible for the finances of the commune for thirteen years, until 2010. In March of that year, during a council stormy municipal council, his delegations as 4th deputy mayor were withdrawn at the request of Pierre Samot.

Nevertheless, the city council voted for him to remain deputy, contrary to the mayor’s wishes. The latter wanted to find a form of political cohesion within the municipal majority. A cohesion undermined in the run-up to the regional elections of March 2010. Alfred Sinosa then took the side of the list of patriots led by Alfred Marie-Jeanne and against that of Bâtir le Pays Martinique of Pierre Samot.

Over the months, the dissensions become fundamental differences. They reached their climax in the cantonal elections, the last in our history, in March 2011. The president of the community, Claude Lise, in office since 1992, was supported for a new mandate by the coalition between his party, the Rassemblement Démocratique pour la Martinique (RDM) and the independence camp grouped around the MIM of Alfred Marie-Jeanne.

Josette Manin, from Bâtir le Pays Martinique, is supported by the Ensemble Pour une Martinique Nouvelle (EPMN) coalition gathered around the Martinique Progressive Party (PPM) of Serge Letchimy. The two rounds of voting give 22 votes to each. It was then that the candidacy of the oldest member of the assembly was put forward for the third and final round of voting, a certain Alfred Sinosa. He lost by a single vote, 23 to 22, against Josette Manin, who became the first woman elected to the presidency of the Department.

Faithful to his positioning, Alfred Sinosa calls on the Lamentin population to vote for Alfred Marie-Jeanne in the 2012 legislative elections. Who will be the first deputy of the new first constituency, called Center-Atlantic.

Little by little, the dean of departmental and regional elected officials is withdrawing from active political life. He put an end to all his responsibilities on the eve of the first territorial elections in December 2015. Former president of Aiglon, Alfred Sinosa ended his teaching career as a national education inspector. He will leave the memory of a man of convictions, willingly smiling, with sparkling eyes behind big glasses. His calm tone and deep voice made it easy to listen to him. And often, to hear it.
