NEW YORK – A cruel game of fate! The Olympic medalist and record holder died exactly on his birthday. Larry James battled colon cancer.
Larry James was born on November 6, 1946. Already during school, he was involved in athletics – running and jumping.
In 1968, James became a double medalist at the Olympics in Mexico City. He won silver in the 400-meter run and won gold with his colleagues in the relay. With their performance, they set a new record, which was broken only in 1992. He also broke the record that had been valid until then, but was beaten by a few hundredths by his teammate Lee Evans.

He won two gold medals at the World University Games in 1970.
Larry later applied himself as a coach. He served Pomona University as a coach, dean and head of the athletic department for 36 years. “He loved to inspire people around him, especially student-athletes. His famous words were: great performance, great grades, graduation,” the competent ones from the university said.
Larry James died on November 6, 2008, exactly on his 61st birthday. According to the athletic coordinator from the university where the former athlete worked, the cause of death was colon cancer.
