Kollam: Producer Achani Ravi aka K. who gave a handful of classic films to Malayalam cinema. Ravindranathan Nair (90) passed away. He celebrated his Navati last Monday. He was also known as General Pictures Ravi.

He gave birth to several critically acclaimed films like Kanchana Seetha, Thumb, Kummatti, Esthappan, Pokuveil, etc. Achani Ravi’s films have played a major role behind the development of artistic films in Malayalam cinema from the seventies to the nineties such as Elipatthayam, Manju, Mukhamukham, Anantaram and Suryaan.
A multiple national and state film award winner, he was awarded the J.C. Award by the Kerala government in 2008 for his contributions to Malayalam cinema. Daniel was honored with the award.
K. Ravindran Nair was born in a wealthy family dealing in cashew production and export. In 1967, he founded General Pictures, p. That’s how he made his first film, Bhaskaran’s directorial ‘Kanthu Kandetiyilla’.Kattukurang and Lakshaprabhu followed in the next year.
The 1973 film Achani earned him the name Achani Ravi. This film was also a commercial success. He donated the income from the films to build the Kollam Public Library.
In 1977, a new chapter began in his life. Kanchana Seetha with Aravindan was released that year. This was followed by four more Aravindan films namely Thumb (1978), Kummati (1979), Esthappan (1979) and Pokuveil (1981). His next film, Elipathayam (1981), was directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Three more films, Mukhamugam (1984), Anantaram (1987) and Subyaan came later. Meanwhile, he also produced Manju (1982) for MT Vasudevan Nair.
He has also worked as a jury member of the National Film Awards, a member of the Central Board of Film Certification and a member of the Film Development Corporation.
He produced a total of 14 films.
