The Nobel Prize winning physicist from England who coined the idea of the Higgs boson particle or often called the God Particle, Higgs died at the age of 94 at his home in Edinburgh, Scotland.
According to a physicist at the University of Edinburgh, Alan Walker, who is also a close friend, Higgs died from a blood disorder.
Higgs was a 35-year-old assistant professor at the university of Edinburgh in 1964 when he suggested the existence of a new particle that would later explain how other particles acquired mass.

The God Particle became the basis for a set of theories known as the Standard Model, which summarizes all human knowledge about the elementary particles and forces that shape the universe.
Almost half a century later, on July 4 2012, this man born in Newcastle 1929 heard that the particle he predicted had been discovered. “This is truly an extraordinary thing to happen in my life,” Higgs said, as written on Nytimes.com.
Edinburgh University Chancellor Professor Peter Mathieson said Higgs was an extraordinary individual and a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination had enriched human knowledge of the world around him.

“His pioneering work has motivated thousands of scientists, and his legacy will continue to inspire many more generations to come.”
Physicist and Atlas collaboration member Jon Butterworth said the Higgs was a hero to the particle physics community.
“The particle that bears his name is perhaps the single most astonishing example of how seemingly abstract mathematical ideas can make predictions that turn out to have enormous physical consequences,” said Jon as written on theguardian.com

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awarded the Higgs the Nobel Prize, said at the time that the standard model of physics underlying scientific understanding of the universe relies on the existence of a special type of particle, namely the Higgs particle. These particles originate from an invisible field that fills all space.
“Even when the universe appears empty, this field still exists. Without it, we would not exist, because it is through contact with fields that particles acquire mass. The theory proposed by Englert and Higgs explains this process.”
Higgs is survived by two sons, Chris and Jonny, his daughter-in-law Suzanne and two grandchildren. His wife, a linguistics lecturer, Jody, died in 2008. (Z-6)
