Remembering the Legacy of Héctor Bonilla: Celebrating His 85th Birthday with the Federal Ministry of Culture and Inbal

The federal Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal) remember this March 14 the 85th anniversary of the birth of the actor, director, theater producer and politician Héctor Bonilla, who dedicated more than 50 years to exalting art and the culture of Mexico from different trenches, which is why he was declared artistic heritage of Mexico City during his lifetime.

As a student graduated from ENAT and as a professional actor, Héctor Bonilla’s life was always linked to Inbal, an institution with which he worked in productions such as The little Princeby Antoine de Saint Exupéry, y The wonderful lensby Emilio Carballido.

In 2019, Inbal paid a special tribute to him on the occasion of his 50 years of experience with a ceremony held at the Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo of the Centro Cultural del Bosque (CCB) – the venue where he was born for the theater – and gave him the recognition Notable trajectories of the arts in Mexico. That same year it received the Cervantina Prize from the International Cervantino Festival, and the Government of Mexico City named it Living Cultural Heritage of Mexico City.

He participated in more than 140 stagings

Héctor Bonilla was born on March 14, 1939, in Mexico City, with the name of Héctor Hermilo Bonilla Rebentun. From a young age he was interested in acting and entered the National School of Theater Art (ENAT) of Inbal where he had, among other teachers, Alejandro Jodorowsky.

One of his first performances in professional theater occurred in 1962 with the play gold cuffsby Clifford Odets, which earned him a comment in the Diorama of Culture from Excélsior: “Héctor Bonilla is a young actor with enormous possibilities, with a stage presence that manages to convince and excite.”

From then on he participated in more than 140 productions throughout an outstanding theatrical career with works such as Zarathustrade Jodorowsky; My life is my life?de Brian Clark; The Argonautsby Sergio Magaña; Abroad, by Larry Shue; The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; and stored, by David Desola, and musical comedies The coming flood y Sugaramong many others.

That same year he made his film debut with the film young and beautifulby Fernando Cortés, and in 1967 he ventured into television through the series The menagerie. In both facets she participated in more than 100 productions.

He did dubbing for films like Ratatouille, The jungle book, Coco y Ana and Bruno and was narrator in shows such as Peter and the wolfby Sergei Prokofiev, and The carnival of the animalsby Camille Saint-Saëns for a record collection.

In the cinema he won the Ariel award for best actor for Meridian 100, by Alfredo Joskowicz, and by Red Dawn, by Jorge Fons, a film that he also produced. In 2019 he was awarded the Golden Ariel in recognition of his career in cinema.

In November 2022, the Inbal paid him a posthumous tribute at the Palace of Fine Arts, and in December, the Inbal also posthumously presented him with its highest award: the Fine Arts Gold Medal, an award collected by his widow, the actress Sofía Álvarez, accompanied by her children.
