Remembering the Dead: Pope Francis Calls for Hope and Peace at Memorial Mass

On November 2, the day of commemoration of the dead, Pope Francis presided over a memorial mass at the “Falled Soldiers Cemetery” in the south of Rome. The Pope pointed out that remembering the dead is a way to look forward to the future and invited everyone to ask God to give us the grace of hope so that we can embark on the journey to encounter the Lord and all people.

(Vatican News Network) At 10 a.m. on November 2, Pope Francis went to the “Falled Soldiers Cemetery” in the south of Rome to preside over a mass in memory of the dead. About three hundred believers braved the rain to attend the Mass hosted by the Pope.

When the Pope arrived at the cemetery, he was welcomed by Italian administrative officials. He then went in a wheelchair to lay flowers and pray silently in front of the tombs of some soldiers. After the prayers, Mass begins.

In his homily, the Pope reflected on “memory and hope.” Regarding memory, the Pope pointed out, “the memory of our ancestors who lived their whole life and ended their earthly life; the memory of the many people who were kind to us: in our families, among our friends…. And also the memory of those who, although they were unable to do so, A person who did many good deeds but is remembered and pitied by God.” This is the mystery of God’s infinite mercy.

Next, the Pope talked about hope. “Today’s hope is a memory that helps us look to the future,” the Pope said. “We are on a journey to encounter, to encounter the Lord and all people. We should ask the Lord to give us Our grace is hope: hope never disappoints; hope is the virtue that drives us forward every day, helping us solve problems and find ways out.” Hope never disappoints.

The Pope then mentioned the soldiers he was commemorating, most of whom were killed in action between the ages of 20 and 30. “This reminds me of today’s wars,” said the Pope. “The same thing is happening today: many young people and people who are no longer young… wars all over the world, but also wars very close to us, in Europe and beyond : How many people died! Lives were destroyed without even realizing it!”

“Today, we remember the dead, cherish the memory of the dead, protect hope, pray to the Lord for peace, and hope that people will no longer kill each other in war. Too many innocent people have died, too many soldiers have died. But why is this happening? ? War is always a failure, and there is never a complete victory. Yes, one side defeated the other, but there is always a price to pay behind the scenes. This is failure.”

Finally, the Pope prayed: “Let us pray to the Lord for our dead and for everyone: May the Lord accept everyone. We also ask God to have mercy on us and to give us hope: hope that moves people forward and Let us be able to walk together with everyone toward the Lord when we are called by him.”
