The message and gesture of Manchester United

“Sir Bobby Charlton, 1937-2023. Words will never be enough,” the club wrote on its networks and wore its shield in black as a sign of mourning for the magnitude of the figure of the former soccer player.

Who was Bobby Charlton?

He was an integral part of the English team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1966, an achievement that is still a source of pride in England today. Charlton was one of the tournament’s top scorers and scored a crucial goal in the final against West Germany.

He survived the Munich tragedy

Charlton was one of the survivors of the Munich air tragedy in 1958, in which eight United players died. After that he stayed at the club to help the team’s resurgence, with which he won three local championships, an FA CUP and a European Cup.

In addition to being an idol of the Red Devils, Charlton was considered one of the best midfielders in England’s history. His record of 49 goals stood for almost 50 years, until it was surpassed by Wayne Rooney.
