Remembering Shane MacGowan: Reflections from Nick Cave and Bruce Springsteen

In his essay, Cave also includes Sinéad O’Connor, who died earlier this year. He recalls meeting the two at MacGowan’s 60th birthday celebration. Cave, who recorded Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World with MacGowan in 1992, says he was touched by the way his Irish friend was loved by audiences. “What touched me at that moment was the extraordinary display of pure and powerful love from the audience for this man. It was something I have never experienced before,” Cave wrote.

“Shane was honored not only for his many talents, but also for who he was,” Cave continues. “A beautiful but damaged man, who embodied a kind of purity and innocence, generosity and spiritual intelligence, unlike any other.” Cave also recalls that Sinéad O’Connor had once said that MacGowan was an angel. Cave doesn’t dare say whether that is true. “But Shane was blessed with an uncommon goodness and a deep sense of what is true, which was strangely heightened by his brokenness, his humanity. He was loved in all the earth.” He concludes his piece by stating that O’Connor, who died earlier this year, was also very loved. “Both will be greatly missed.”

Bruce Springsteen also wrote a piece about MacGowan. “Shane was one of my favorite songwriters of all time,” says The Boss. “The passion and deep intensity of his music and lyrics are unparalleled.”

Springsteen also mentions his last meeting with MacGowan. In May, just before a performance in Dublin, the American visited him. “I was fortunate to spend some time with Shane and his lovely wife Victoria. He was very ill, but still beautifully present in heart and mind.” Springsteen calls MacGowan’s music timeless and eternal. “A hundred years from now, people will still be singing Shane’s songs.”
