Screenwriter Kees Holierhoek passed away last Saturday at the age of 81. His family announced this in an obituary on Saturday. Holierhoek, among other things, co-wrote the screenplays for the films Soldier of Orange in The Wrestler by Paul Verhoeven.

The Delft-born writer also came up with the idea for the television series clover meadow, from the second half of the seventies. Holierhoek also contributed to the script for several episodes for that series. He also co-wrote several plays and wrote books, such as Roosters in the Monastery Garden (1965).

Holierhoek (Delft, 1941) studied Dutch language and literature in Leiden. As a writer, he won several prizes in his career, such as the Edmond Hustinx Prize in 1986. Later he was chairman of the Lira Foundation (Literary Rights Authors), the copyright organization for writers. In 2002, Holierhoek was appointed knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau and was an honorary member of the Association of Men of Letters for his services to Dutch authors and translators.

A well-known screenplay prize is named after Holierhoek: the Kees Holierhoek Screenplay Prize, previously the Lira Screenplay Prize. An amount of 15,000 euros is involved.
