Jakarta –
The founder of Ceylon Dilmah tea, Merrill J Fernando has passed away. The man who owns one of the biggest tea brands in the world died at 93 years old on Thursday morning (20/7/2023).
There is no certainty regarding the cause behind Merrill J Fernando’s death. He died surrounded by his sons and grandchildren, in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
“He was the first tea grower to overcome the economic colonialism we still suffer from because our tea until the 1980s was shipped in large quantities to Britain, the United States and beyond,” his son said. Channel News Asia.
In his tribute on Thursday, Dilmah said that Fernando devoted his life to drinking tea, working every day until he was 91 years old and managed to avoid being ‘senile’, or maintaining his memory, until he died at almost 100 years old.
According to Fernando’s business philosophy on the company’s website, he says that tea is beneficial for the daily life of many people in all walks of life.
“I want my love of tea to benefit customers, workers, marginalized people in society and the environment; I made Dilmah a business that is also about human service.”
Dilmah has a philanthropic arm, the MJF Charitable Foundation, which was founded in 2002. A minimum of 10 percent of profit before tax from Dilmah funds the foundation’s activities. Fernando then increased it to 15 percent in 2020.
“We remember Merrill J Fernando for his humanity and accomplishments personally and passionately creating a global family behind the goals he has pursued every day of his life for 73 years,” said the Dilmah Company.
