Actor Mark Margolis has died at the age of 83. He was best known for the series Breaking Bad in Better Call Saul, in which he played Mexican mobster Hector ‘Tío’ Salamanca. Margolis was in a wheelchair equipped with a bell that Hector communicated with after suffering a stroke for that role. He received an Emmy for this in 2012.

Before Margolis’ role in Breaking Bad, he was best known for the 1983 movie Scarface in which he played the villain Alberto the Shadow. He acted in that movie alongside protagonist Al Pacino. The job didn’t pay off financially. “Honestly, six months after Scarface I had to take a job with a friend for a few months to make ends meet,” Margolis said.

Margolis then played relatively small roles in dozens of films and plays, but his big breakthrough with the general public was as Hector ‘Tío’ Salamanca. He got the inspiration for this from his deceased mother-in-law, Shirley.

Tragically she spent years in a Florida nursing home following a stroke. “We used to visit her and she couldn’t talk. When we walked into her room she would get so excited she would move the left side of her mouth like she was chewing tobacco. So I kind of stole that from her.”

Mark Margolis died Thursday in a hospital in New York after a short illness.
