Remembering Magoo: The Rapper with a Distinctive Voice Passes Away at 50

The rapper with the distinctive voice was 50 years old. The cause of death is not yet known.

Magoo is dead. The US rapper is best known for his guest appearances on Missy Elliott songs and his regular collaboration with producer Timbaland. Melvin Barcliff, Magoo’s real name, passed away on Sunday (August 13), as his former colleagues announced via social media. The cause of death is so far unclear.

Magoo was born on July 12, 1973 in Norfolk, Virginia. As a teenager he met Timothy Mosley, who later produced hits like Missy Elliott’s “Work It” and Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” under the name Timbaland. Together, the two started rapping and making beats at an early age. With Timbaland’s cousin Pharrell Williams they formed the group Sourrounded by Idiots and drew attention to themselves in Virginia. As a young talent, Timbaland landed his first record deal in the mid-1990s, while still retaining Magoo as his musical partner.

Magoo first came to wider audiences as a guest rapper on Missy Elliott’s song “Beep Me 911,” which appeared on her debut album SUPA DUPA FLY. The trio of Missy Elliott, Magoo and Timbaland would go on to record many more tracks over the years to come. The trio landed a hit with “Cop That Shit” in 2003, which was released as a single from the Timbaland & Magoo album UNDER CONSTRUCTION PART II. It was the third and last album Magoo made with his old friend.

From the mid-2000s, Magoo withdrew more and more from the hip-hop world. According to his own statements, life in the limelight was too much for him, although he never regretted his creative time with Timbo, Missy and other musicians. His former companions also expressed their grief for Magoo via social media. Timbaland wrote on Instagram: “This hits me in a different way. Long live Melvin aka Magoo!!! Tim and Magoo forever. Rest in peace my king.”

Missy Elliott also paid tribute to Magoo on X, formerly Twitter: “I wouldn’t wish such posts on anyone. At first I was shocked, and now reality really broke in on me. I asked you if you would rap on ‘Beep Me 911’ and I listened to your verse over and over again because I loved your VA style. Writing this is so heartbreaking, words fail me… RIP Magoo”
