Remembering K. Jayaram: Kerala’s Legendary Cricketer and Former Ranji Trophy Captain Passes Away

Kochi: One of the best batsmen Kerala has seen and former Kerala Ranji Trophy team captain K. Jayaram (Jayaraman – 67) passed away. He died on Saturday evening due to a heart attack. He was admitted to Ernakulam Lakshmi Hospital on Saturday morning suffering from fever.

He also held the duties of Under-19 Indian Cricket Team Selector and Kerala Ranji Team Selector. He was a member of the Kerala Cricket Association Apex Council.

Jayaram has scored 2538 runs in 46 games in first-class cricket for Kerala, with five centuries and 10 fifties in his career. Jayaram’s record of four centuries in five games in a Ranji Trophy season is still unbroken. In 1986, Jayaram’s centuries were against Goa, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka teams. In 2012, V.A. Jagadish came close to this record but could not beat it.

Jayaram, who excelled in cricket right from his school days, was selected for the Central Zone school team in 1968. He joined the Kerala Ranji team in 1973 at the age of 17 but made his debut in 1977. He became the captain of Kerala from 1981. Jayaram retired in 1992 and became the selector of the Kerala Ranji team in 1996. He has been the selector of Kerala U-25 and U-22 teams. Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma and others joined the team when Jayaram was the selector of the Under-19 Indian team.

Wife: Rama, Son: Abhay Jayaraman (Engineer, USA). The body, which is kept in the Ernakulam Lakshmi Hospital mortuary, will be cremated at Ernakulam Ravipuram crematorium at 2.30 pm on Monday.
