“Yuris Kulakovs opened the door for me not only to the band (“Pērkons” – author). Juris Kulakovs opened the door to my life, because during the last month, everyone shares their memories with Juri and talks about how much Juri’s personality has had a great influence on them. All these years, in any interview, I have always emphasized that Juris has been the greatest teacher of my life,” Puntulis tells host Inese Vaikule.
“Why is that? Because Juris took me under his wing, a brand new, green field cucumber. I was only around 20 years old at the time, and I had just finished serving and singing in the soldiers’ ensemble “Zvaigznīte”, and then this offer from Jura followed – on April 4, 1982. Yes, it changed my whole life and then, yes, of course, my whole active phase of “Purkona” and this long collaboration with tenors. Likewise, participation in all large-scale compositions written by Jura,” recalls the former Minister of Culture.
“I have emphasized this many times and I can only repeat it again today. I have met many different people in my life – more hardworking, lazier, more talented and less talented, but Juris is probably one of those rare people with whom you feel something special when you communicate. I would probably avoid the words – genius or genius, but when you are next to Juri, you feel that God has touched this person in a very, very special way,” says Puntulis.
