José Sébéloué died at the age of 74 this Sunday, September 3, reported France Antilles. He was one of the figureheads of La Compagnie Créole, a group created in 1975. The singer was born in Ouanary in 1948 in Guyana. Singer-songwriter and guitar player, José Sébéloué began his career with Les Vautours, a Guyanese group. In the 1970s, he enjoyed success in the department with his group Pop-Corn.
“We were very modern and the youth were with us. But that was not enough. I wanted to go further. So I left for France in the spirit of conquering France”told José Sébéloué to France Guyana in 2019. It is therefore with La Compagnie créole, founded by himself, the Martiniquaise Clémence Brintown, the Guadeloupeans Guy Bevert and Arthur Apatout and the Martiniquais Julien Tarquin, that he will experience international success. The group connects the hits and tours around the world with its hits like “Long live Douanier Rousseau!”, “It’s good for morale”, “At the masked ball” or “It makes the birds laugh”.
José Sébéloué, big fan of Quebec
José Sébéloué continued his career over several decades. The Creole Company has multiplied tours around the world. The last one took place in 2023 in Quebec, a province that the singer particularly loved. “The first time we played there, I wondered what we were looking for there, at the doorstep of the USA. In the evening, it was full. After ten minutes, people were making a farandole in the room”he reported to France Guyana. But it is above all of his native department that José Sébéloué keeps the most beautiful memories. “I have kept extraordinary memories, because I was born in the middle of the bush”he told the magazine Don’t read in 1999. The singer was nostalgic “of this village life” and compensated for this lack by spending time finding musical instruments reminding him of Guyana, “the echo of the forest or the sound of the river”.
