Remembering Hersha Parady: The Legacy of Alice Garvey in Little Farm – From Breakout Role to Life Off-Screen

As a postal worker and teacher, her character took a different path than many women of the time. Hersha Parady played Alice Garvey on the hit series Little Farm, a character who enriched and disrupted life in Walnut Grove. Parady has passed away at the age of 78.

She underwent surgery there last month after being diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor. A GoFundMe page was recently set up for Parady to collect money for her treatment.

Hersha Parady was born Betty Sandhoff on May 25, 1945 and grew up in Ohio. As a teenager, she appeared in plays at local theaters and eventually moved to Los Angeles. There she was engaged for a tour production of “A Streetcar Named Desire” alongside Jon Voight. Parady made his screen debut in an episode of Without Fear and Saddle. Further guest appearances in “Mannix” or with the “Waltons” followed.

Parady had her first appearance on “Our Little Farm” in a completely different role. During the third season, she played Charles Ingalls’ (Michael Landon) sister-in-law, Eliza. From the first episode of season four, however, she came on board as Alice Garvey, the wife of Jonathan Garvey (Merlin Olsen), who first worked in the Walnut Grove post office and later also as a teacher. As a woman who was already divorced and working, she caused quite a stir in the small community. The marriage to Jonathan also threatened to break up briefly before the two were reconciled.

After Little Farm, Hersha Parady continued to appear in television movies, including Temptation and Mom at Fifteen. She has also made guest appearances on Unsolved Mysteries, Animal Family, and Kenan & Kel. Parady was married to producer John Peverall, who won an Academy Award for Best Picture in 1979 for “The Way Through Hell.” Parady leaves behind her son and siblings.
