On January 19, 2022, Hans-Jürgen “Dixie” Dörner, an icon of German football, died at the age of 70. Dörner, who dedicated his entire playing life to Dynamo Dresden, leaves behind an unparalleled legacy that cements his reputation as one of the greatest football players of all time. In honor of Dörner, the number three will no longer be given.
With an impressive record of 558 appearances for Dynamo Dresden, he holds the record as the club’s most played player. His successes include 65 European Cup appearances, five GDR championships and five FDGB Cup victories. Dörner’s ability to direct and control the game was legendary and led the GDR national team to the Olympic gold medal in Montreal in 1976. Dörner’s outstanding career and his unique style on the pitch were closely linked to the black and yellow Dynamo Dresden jersey and the number 3 shirt.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements and as a sign of eternal adoration and gratitude, the Dynamo Dresden sports community has decided to no longer award the number 3.
