Remembering Grigory Belenky: A Celebration of a Legendary Cameraman

Grigory and Irina got married at Eldar Ryazanov’s dacha On the last day of September, in the Alexander Nevsky Church in Moscow, relatives, friends and colleagues said goodbye to the famous cameraman Grigory Belenky, who died after a serious illness at the age of 73. He worked a lot with director Alla Surikova and directed the hits “Be My Husband,” “Monday’s Children,” “I Want to Go to Prison,” as well as “Old Nags” by Eldar Ryazanov and other films and TV series. And at the turn of the 90s and 2000s, for several years, Grigory Romanovich was the third husband of movie star Irina Rozanova.

– They had love to the fullest! – recalled actor Sergei Nikonenko. – How attentively Irochka treated Grisha! I spoiled him with fish and dry food while filming. Not everyone gets this!

Rozanova met Grigory Belenky on the set of the film “Monday’s Children.”

“I knew the artist Rozanova before, of course,” the cameraman himself told Express Gazeta. “But it was in Alla Surikova’s painting that my feeling for Ira suddenly flared up like a spark. And I proposed marriage to her when I was filming Eldar Ryazanov’s film “Old Nags.” Spontaneously, without preparation, we rushed to the registry office and persuaded us to sign it. And Eldar Aleksandrovich invited everyone to his dacha to celebrate this joyful event.

– And Grisha and I met in the film “Be My Husband” 43 years ago. “I am the director, he is the cameraman,” Surikova recalled now. – The main roles were played by Elena Proklova and Andrei Mironov. And Belenky and his first wife, flight attendant Marina, had a daughter, Dasha, in Moscow during our filming in Sochi. And while Grisha went to the capital to meet them, he was replaced on the set by his faithful friend Elik Karavaev (who directed “Battalions Ask for Fire”, “The Barber of Siberia” and other films of the master in different years who would be the husband of Sergei Bondarchuk’s daughter Natalya and Yuri Gagarin’s daughter Elena .).

Punch in the eye

According to Alla Ilyinichna, everyone lovingly called Belenky Grigory Karmanovich:

– Because anyone could get into his pocket. In the sense that he easily lent money. He also cooked deliciously and ate very appetizingly. They had a whole ritual with the director of the film: they bought food, then cooked and treated everyone.

Of course, with this approach, the master instantly became a friend to everyone around him, including the artists.

– He’s an amazing person! In addition to being a huge professional, he never lost heart and remained wise and easy-going. In “The Man from Boulevard des Capuchins,” Andrei Mironov dared Grisha to come closer to him and film the jump in close-up. Belenky almost fell as a result. While saving the camera, he was hit in the eye, but did not move and finished filming the scene.

“Be My Husband” (1981)

About six years ago, when the film group celebrated the 30th anniversary of “…Capucins” in a restaurant, Grigory, who was no longer very healthy, jokingly scolded Surikov:

“Here, Alka, I’ve been carrying a camera for 40 years, and now my back and neck hurt because of you.”

Recalling this story, the filmmaker summarized that her cameraman adored his work.

“Monday’s Children” (1997)

“By that time, he had long broken up with Rozanova, but, despite the divorce, they remained friends,” added Alla Ilyinichna.

“It is contraindicated for creative individuals to exist together,” Grigory Romanovich himself once explained to Express Gazeta, “so we fled when our boat crashed into everyday life.” As fate would have it, when we separated, it was necessary to change our place of residence. Without saying a word, we indicated the same landmarks for realtors: a house with security, next to Mosfilm. This is how we still live. Neighbors and friends.

Help from ex-wife

Rozanova did not come to the farewell ceremony, which was organized by his daughter Daria.

“I don’t know her well, we haven’t communicated much,” said 43-year-old Daria Belenkaya, who now works as director of business ethics in a large company. – I’m daddy’s only daughter. My mother, after leaving the stewardess job, was an English teacher, and then worked for a long time in the representative office of an international company. My parents lived together for 20 years, and after the divorce, my mother never remarried. They were friends, my mother helped her ex-husband. His heart failure worsened, which turned into a chronic disease. So it became difficult for him to cook and take care of himself. I hired a babysitter for him, my daughter and I went to see him on the weekend, and they brought him treats. And then the nurse called me and said that dad was gone – his heart couldn’t stand it, and he died in his sleep.
