AS Saint-Étienne is in mourning. In a press release, the Forez club announced the death of Georges Bereta at the age of 77 following a long illness.
“ASSE loses a legendary player, an immense track record, an ambassador for life. The sadness is infinite. (…) He made the crowds rise and will contribute, tomorrow again, to the greatness of our AS Saint-Étienne” , wrote the Saint-Etienne club on Twitter. Very touched by the disappearance of one of the greatest players in the history of the club, the whole of ASSE wishes to send its most sincere condolences to the family as well as those close to Georges Bereta, adds the club in a statement. The memory of an exceptional player, ASSE legend, and a man of values with a huge heart will remain in the memories of all those who knew him”.
An XXL track record
Georges Bereta played 343 games with AS Saint-Étienne. Between 1966 and 1974, he scored 68 goals. In addition to the six crowns of champion of France, his record with ASSE shows three finals won in the Coupe de France (1968, 1970, 1974) and as many in the Champions Trophy (1967, 1968, 1969). The attacking midfielder wore the France team jersey 44 times (four goals) and inherited the captain’s armband on 12 occasions between 1967 and 1975. Despite his refusal, he was transferred to Olympique de Marseille in January 1975 where he played 96 games (10 goals) and won the 1976 Coupe de France.
