Remembering Franco Zuccalà: A Sports Journalism Legend

He died at the age of 83, on the night between 29 and 30 November, Franco Zuccalà, long-time sports journalist originally from Catania. In his career he worked at Gazzetta dello Sport (where he was editor-in-chief of the Sicilian edition), Tuttosport and La Sicilia, among others. But it is with Rai, where he joined in 1982, that his face became known to millions of Italians. With national television he has worked as a correspondent for programs such as La Domenica Sportiva, Novantesimo Minuto and Tg1.

Zuccalà has closely followed all the most important sporting events, among which the ten football world cups stand out. He has also interviewed some of the most famous figures of the twentieth century, from Nelson Mandela, Henry Kissinger and Sophia Loren to sporting legends such as Pelé, Diego Maradona and Alfredo Di Stéfano. Since 2000 he was a columnist for the Italpress news agency, for which he also made documentaries.
