Pacheco, as he was known by most Colombians, arrived in the country at the age of four, because he and his family wanted to flee the Civil War that was being fought in Spain, and thanks to the relationship that his mother had with the then president Eduardo Santos, managed to enter without problems and settle in Bogotá.

Although he lived in South America since he was a child, his Spanish roots and his love for bullfighting never left him. As time went by, his ability to entertain began to be noticed, because while he worked as a sailor with the Great Colombian Merchant Fleet he spent hours with his guitar entertaining his shipmates.

It was there where Alberto Peñaranda, who at that time was the owner of the programming company Punch, discovered the talent of a young Fernando González Pacheco and convinced him to become part of his programming company and start a new life on Colombian television.

In 1957, Fernando González Pacheco left the sea to enter the world of television where he had the opportunity to present several programs, including gems of the small screen such as Animalandia or El program del Millón.

In an interview for Soho magazine, Pacheco assured that his life changed thanks to Alberto Peñaranda, who after seeing him singing and encouraging his companions on a ship proposed him to do the same, but on television.

“If it wasn’t for Alberto Peñaranda, founder and owner of Punch Televisión, I would never have appeared on television. In 1954 I was working as a steward on a ship of the Grancolombiana Merchant Fleet, one day, while in Buenaventura to set sail for England, Mr. Peñaranda saw me singing and saying a few nonsense things and it occurred to him to propose that I do the same, but for television. ”.

That conversation with Alberto Peñaranda led him to settle in Bogotá and enter a job that he did not know, in fact, he was not interested, since he did not have one of his plans to dedicate himself to being a presenter, something he did for the rest of his life.

“I answered that I was not interested and he challenged me by telling me that I was not capable. So I ended up traveling to Bogotá without knowing that this was what I would dedicate myself to for the rest of my life. My first participation was in the Artists Agency and my first mistake was made when I presented Agustín Lara’s song, Noche de ronda, as Noche ‘berrionda’.

Fernando González Pacheco’s experience as a presenter gave him several lessons, for example, it taught him to be punctual, since there were no pre-recorded ones and everything was broadcast live, he also recognized that he did not have a good memory, so he used the soles of the shoes in case “at some point I forgot something, I just crossed my legs and started reading.”

According to Fernando González Pacheco, several of his programs helped him achieve goals in life. For example, with Música Maestro he was able to direct an orchestra, while others helped him be remembered by Colombians.

“Animalandia was the one that made me popular, because the children began to recognize me on the street. The million dollar program managed to get people to say to me on the street ‘Pacheco, give me the a’, with Música maestro I was able to satisfy a lifelong frustration: learn to play an instrument to be able to conduct an orchestra.”
