Remembering Erwin Olaf: Celebrating Diversity Through Provocative Photography

Sep 22, 2023 at 11:09 PM Update: 2 hours ago

The public can say goodbye to photographer Erwin Olaf, who died on Wednesday afternoon in Amsterdam. In the Westerkerk in the center of the city, everyone has the opportunity to pay their last respects from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

A private farewell will take place for his loved ones on Wednesday. No further announcements will be made about this meeting.

Olaf died unexpectedly at the age of 64 from complications following a lung transplant. The photographer was successful worldwide with his work, in which he said he celebrated “diversity in all its forms”. With his work he often wanted to offer a platform to marginalized groups in society.

Olaf’s photos were characterized by a provocative style with a lot of nudity, which was initially seen as provocative. Later the photographer mainly received recognition for his work.

The photographer had a special bond with the Dutch royal family. In 2013, Olaf designed the new Dutch euro coins with King Willem-Alexander, who was inaugurated that year. Four years later he also made the official portraits of the royal family.
