Remembering Cilly Dartell: From Heart of the Netherlands to the Theater and Beyond

Cilly Dartell’s name was inextricably linked for years Heart of the Netherlands. The presenter, who died on Wednesday at the age of 66, was still full of plans after her forced exit from the SBS program. Dartell also left her mark in the theater.

“She gave Heart of the Netherlands literally and figuratively a face,” said Talpa, the company under which SBS6 falls, in response to Dartell’s death. “Almost from the start, Cilly was one of the program’s defining presenters for many years and she has made an important contribution to success.”

Dartell started working on the daily SBS program in 1996, which then existed for one year. Heart of the Netherlands focuses on local and regional news that concerns the ‘ordinary citizen’. Dartell is completely at home there. She was one of the regular faces of the program for years, until she moved to Dubai in 2007 for her husband’s work. Even then, she does not say goodbye to the program. She travels back and forth twice a month for the presentation job.

‘Cried for weeks’ after discharge

In 2012, Talpa decides that Dartell’s time is up Heart of the Netherlands is on it. From then on, the program will be presented by one presenter and Talpa wants to use younger faces for this. The decision is difficult for Dartell. “The blow was hard. I cried for weeks. I did the presentation for sixteen years. Heart of the Netherlands is in my heart. I love this work dearly. That’s what makes it so sad,” she said at the time The Telegraph.

Dartell decides to stop torturing herself by watching the program for a while after her discharge. “I am in the process of processing something that was inextricably linked to me. That is accompanied by emotions. Watching the broadcast does not help with that,” she says. Spits know.

After a period of processing, Dartell is recovering. “I’m hungry and I want to take advantage of everything. The most important thing is that it bubbles up again inside,” she says The Telegraph.

Dartell wanted to make a name for himself in theater

Dartell has after Heart of the Netherlands another career to fall back on. The presenter has not always worked in journalism. She only made that switch in the early 1990s. For this she can mainly be admired in the theater. It is a career that she inherited from home, but she never wanted to rely on her family connections.

Dartell, born as Priscilla Veltmeijer, was the daughter of the famous impresario Lou Veltmeijer. As soon as she pursues a life as an actress at the age of seventeen, she does so under the name Cilly Dartell, because she does not want to live on her father’s reputation. Youp van ‘t Hek initially discovers her and gives her a place in his cabaret group.

After years of cabaret, Dartell can also be seen in several musicals. For example, she plays alongside Piet Römer in the play The perpetrator did it by Annie MG Schmidt. She also played a role in an adaptation of Grease.

Last years in Florida

There is no return to the theater. She is second to none on television Heart of the Netherlands still to be seen. Her dismissal by Talpa leads to a commotion and a lot of media attention and Omroep MAX manages to bring her in for the program Studio MAX Live. She presented this from 2013 to 2014.

Dartell will move from Dubai to Florida in 2017. She has already been diagnosed with lung cancer. Things go well for a while, but in 2020 the disease returns and the presenter no longer gets better. She comes back to the Netherlands and surrounds herself with friends and family as much as possible.

At the end of last year she tells Dragonfly: “Of course everyone knows that you should enjoy life to the fullest, every day, but that feeling is perhaps even stronger for me at the moment. I have turned that switch in my brain.”
