He was not only the mascot of the University of Augsburg but also a little internet star: The cat named Leon, who became known as “CampusCat”, died in September after a long illness. “We will miss Campus Cat very much,” said the University of Augsburg on their Facebook account with. The animal has been the cuddly companion of many generations of students and employees for many years. The area around the library was particularly his territory.
The university expressed its condolences to the owner on Facebook. She is said to have lovingly cared for the cat at home during the last few months of his illness. “We are very sad and at the same time full of gratitude for the many wonderful moments we were able to experience with Leon the cat!” They called on their followers to share their stories about the cat in the comments.

CampusCat Augsburg: University cat becomes internet famous
The university cat Leon had become a minor celebrity on social media. The Facebook-Account „CampusCat Augsburg“ with almost 29,000 followers repeatedly shared photos and messages on behalf of the four-legged friend. A whole team took care of bringing Leon’s adventures closer to the university’s students and anyone interested. Leon also moved on the international stage. As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, a film festival in Asia showed cat pictures and cat videos from the Augsburg campus. The students are said to have even tried to have their mascot officially named a service cat. The Free State would then have had to take over the food and medical care – but it didn’t get that far.
“No matter whether it was a library, a lecture hall, a classroom or an employee office – he stopped by everywhere,” wrote the “CampusCat Augsburg” team on Facebook. For many years he has brought students through the exam phase or strenuous lectures. The campus cat has turned 16 years old. He is said to have fallen asleep peacefully at home. “CampusCat Augsburg” also said goodbye to its mascot: “Rest in peace, little red hero!” The cat should be preserved on campus for posterity: the first ideas for a bronze cast have already been developed at the University of Augsburg.
