Remembering Argentina’s First Television Broadcast 72 Years Ago

Exactly 72 years ago, on October 17, 1951, the first official television broadcast was made in the country. After different projects, the event chosen to test the technical devices and cutting-edge resources obtained abroad by Jaime Yankelevich, a pioneer in broadcasting who came from radio, was the event for the Peronist Loyalty Day .

The first images that were seen on the televisions of that time that were near the Ministry of Public Works in the Monserrat neighborhood, on whose terrace the antenna was housed, were a crowd that approached the Plaza de Mayo.

From the balcony of the second floor of Banco Nación, Enrique Telémaco Susini, Adolfo Agromayor and Gerardo Noizeaux, commanded by Jaime Yankelevich, were in charge of managing the three cameras that recorded Eva Duarte de Perón’s speech.

The broadcast was developed by LR3 Radio Belgrano, which later changed its name to Channel 7 and then to Public Television. After the event, the station continued with programming that included musicals and cartoons. At night, the public was able to watch a special program prepared by Susini, with costumes and scenery provided by the Teatro Colón.

After this historic event, Argentina became a member of the select club of the eight countries that had the novelty, along with the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Great Britain and France.
