In 2023, ten years have passed since the day that can be safely called black in the history of Russian cinema. Under strange circumstances, a wonderful artist Andrei Panin passed away. On May 28, he could have celebrated his 61st birthday, but he died at the 51st year of his life. Until now, disputes have not subsided: was there an accident or someone’s malicious intent?
“And lived and drank according to talent”
For a rather short life, Andrei Vladimirovich managed to play in almost 80 films. Despite the fact that the actor first appeared on the set at the age of thirty.
The audience remembered him and fell in love with him quite quickly – already five years after his film debut, in the role of a sailor in the crime comedy “Mother, do not cry.” Later, there were Stasov in the popular “Kamenskaya”, Voronin in the sensational film “Border. Taiga Romance” and many other images that will forever remain in your memory.
But they didn’t take Panin to study as an actor, a native of Novosibirsk, for a long time – the selection committee was embarrassed by his insufficiently clear speech and “vague appearance”. However, Andrei still made his way – from the fourth time to the Moscow Art Theater School. He was enrolled in the Studio of Alexander Kalyagin.
“An actor from God, what can I say! He was not closed in one role: he could play comedy, tragedy, drama, farce. He worked excellently as an actor, although we all knew that Andrei suffered from a well-known old acting ailment that ruined more than one real talent. They say: “You don’t drink according to your talent,” but he lived and drank according to his talent, ”actor and director Dmitry Astrakhan spoke about his colleague.
Panin managed to shine on the stages of the capital’s theaters. Including in the images of Solyony in “Three Sisters”, Zhevakin in “Marriage”, Otrepyev in “Boris Godunov”.
“The door was locked not with a latch, but with a key”
The body of Andrei Panin was discovered on March 7, 2013 in an apartment owned by the actor on Balaklavsky Prospekt. After serious loads, the artist liked to be left alone. And he just had a lot of work – the main roles in the TV series Sherlock Holmes and Major Sokolov’s Getters.
Alcohol was found in the blood of the deceased actor, and in a concentration that did not correspond to a mild degree of intoxication. The investigation concluded that Panin died a day ago from blood loss after a traumatic brain injury.
It was believed that an accident led to a fatal outcome – a fall from a height of one’s own height. A year after the death of Andrei Vladimirovich, the case of his death was closed “for lack of corpus delicti.”
But some colleagues and friends still do not believe in the version of the accident. Panin’s close friend Gennady Rusin, who discovered the body, said:
“The door was closed not with a latch, but with a key that could be locked from the outside. You should have seen the nightmare that was going on in the apartment.”
Definitely in this whole story, only one thing – no one will return the life of a popularly beloved actor. In those roles that he could still play, we will never see him.
“We rewrote the script for a month and a half”
The role in the series “Major Sokolov’s Getters” was Panin’s last. She was specially written for him. By the time of the artist’s death, all the planned material could not be filmed.
The director of the military drama Bakhtiyor Khudoynazarov recalled:
“We managed to shoot about 80 percent when Andrei passed away. Approximately 40-50 minutes of material were missing. Screenwriter Igor Tilkin had to completely rewrite the ending of the picture.
“The whole story had to be re-invented. It took a month and a half to rewrite the script. How could this happen?” – grieved for his comrade Sergei Garmash, who played one of the key roles in the series.
It was not necessary to voice the role of Panin in the voice of another artist. The director shared his experience of working on the set: “In addition to the usual takes, we also made sound ones. And when, during editing, it became clear that Andrey was not pronouncing some phrase loudly enough or other factors were interfering – the wind, for example, blew – we took the necessary fragments from sound duplicates. We are lucky, we have almost all the sound – live.
The film crew dedicated the film “Major Sokolov’s Getters” to the memory of Andrei Panin.
