Thailand announced that the name of the capital was no longer Bangkok, but Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. However, the name Bangkok is still recognized.
Reported detikTravel from the Bangkok Post, Wednesday (16/2/2022) The Office of the Royal Society (ORST) announced the official change of Bangkok’s name to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. This comes after Cabinet on Tuesday approved a draft announcement by the Prime Minister’s Office of the updated names of countries, territories, administrative zones and capitals, as proposed by ORST.
The new official name, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon will not take effect until it is examined by the committee in charge and examines all draft laws. The Cabinet also asked the panel to consider additional observations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the ORST announcement, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon will be the official name of the capital of the Kingdom of Thailand. However, the name Bangkok will be included in parentheses.
Name Thailand Krung Thep Maha Nakhon will only be used as its official name. Bangkok’s name will still be known in parentheses, he explained on his Facebook page.
On its Facebook page, the Office of the Royal Society also posted a message that the two names could be used, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon and Bangkok, after the announcement of the name change drew public criticism.
In the same announcement, ORST also updated the official spellings for other countries, including Rome and Roma for the Italian Capital, the change of Myanmar’s capital from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw, and the change of the Kingdom of Nepal to the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
Bangkok has been in official use since November 2001 under the proclamation of the Office of the Royal Society. The name ‘Bangkok’ comes from the old area of Bangkok, which is now part of the capital’s larger metropolitan area, the Bangkok Noi and Bangkok Yai districts.
