ROMA, KOMPAS.TV – Remember the green-eyed Afghan girl who was famous because her face was on the front cover of National Geographic magazine decades ago?
The girl who is known as the ‘Afghan Girl’ has now arrived in Italy. He was part of thousands of Afghans who were evacuated following the takeover of the country by the Taliban.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s office said Italy arranged for the evacuation of Sharbat Gulla, the girl’s name, after she asked for help in leaving Afghanistan. Quotes Associated Press, Thursday (11/25/2021), the Italian government will now help him melt into life in the pizza country.

Gulla, now 49, rose to international fame in 1984 as an Afghan refugee girl, after war reporter Steve McCurry photographed her.
Gulla’s face with piercing green eyes was published on the front cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic magazine. After that, McCurry lost track of him.
However, after numerous attempts to track him down, McCurry finally managed to find him again in 2002.
In 2014, Gulla appeared in Pakistan. However, he went into hiding again after local authorities accused him of buying a fake Pakistani identity card and ordered his deportation.
Gulla was flown back to Kabul and greeted by the president, who hosted an event for him at the presidential palace. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani welcomed Gulla and gave him the keys to a new apartment.
