Remedy’s Creative Director Sam Lake Discusses Connections Between Alan Wake 2, Max Payne, and Quantum Break in EW Magazine Interview

Magazine a few days ago EW published an interview with Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake, who discussed in detail the new trailer for Alan Wake 2. Of course, Mr. Door, as a newly announced character portrayed by actor David Harewood. “Mr. Door” was already mentioned in Control, but the connections go even further, as the character strongly resembles Martin Hatch from Quantum Break. Both in character and characteristics, as well as in the name (Door, Hatch). EW magazine asked Lake about that too, and his answer threw some players off:

“The simple, straightforward answer is that of our previous games, Max Payne and Quantum Break are not part of the Remedy Connected Universe. They are not part of the Remedy plans. However, on a purely speculative, somewhat easter egg level, I love the idea of allowing the audience to come up with theories. I don’t want to throw them off the table. We allow questions to be created and give ideas to people who turn them into their own theories. I guess that’s part of the fun.’

The RCU officially consists of Alan Wake and Control (for now), and if you know anything about him, you probably weren’t surprised by Lake’s answer. He couldn’t even say anything else, because Max Payne is in the hands of Rockstar and the rights to Quantum Break still belong to Microsoft. However, this does not change the fact that Remedy is trying to include these games in the RCU, albeit with some twists.

For this, the developers use a kind of “echoes” of individual characters. They are not the same people, but they share practically all the characteristics and often also the appearance. A typical example is Alex Casey, the protagonist of Alan’s books, who is an echo of Max Payne. Not only does he share his characteristics, but in AW2 he is portrayed by Sam Lake, who already lent his face to Max Payne in the first part of this series. So Max Payne is not a direct part of the RCU, but the links are definitely there, and Remedy borrows ideas from this series and includes them in the universe.

The same can be said in the case of Mr. Door, who is indeed very similar to Martin Hatch. After all, it is quite possible that he would be portrayed by the same actor, but Lance Reddick unfortunately died in March of this year.

A third example is the newly confirmed Tim Breaker. According to his last name, he has more of a connection with Bright Falls Sheriff Sara Breaker and her father Frank, a former FBC agent, but Shawn Ashmore, who portrayed the main protagonist of Quantum Break, Jack Joyce, gave him the appearance. At the same time, fans point out that this is one of Remedy’s other puns and his name could mean “time breaker”.

Of course, these are not all connections with Quantum Break, I will discuss them more in upcoming specials about RCU. Anyway, the bottom line is that although Remedy doesn’t specify it (and can’t even because of the licenses), it makes fairly obvious connections between RCU and games like Max Payne or Quantum Break. If Remedy does not get the message back to the brands, we will never see an official inclusion in the universe, however, the connection works without problems even on a semi-official level.
