Remedy Entertainment в press release for investors announced the restart of the development of a shareware multiplayer project codenamed Vanguard. Now the game is called Kestrel – it will be a paid release.
However, the network aspect in Kestrel will remain. Remedy noted that the game will have a “strong, cooperative multiplayer component.” It is possible that the relaunched game will have some kind of single-player campaign.
Remedy said Vanguard’s development was being restarted due to the uncertainty and risks associated with creating a successful game in the fast-changing free-to-play market. Therefore, the studio agreed with Tencent (financing the development) to restart the project.
Since Vanguard had already left the proof of concept phase, the decision was made to return the project to this phase. Some of the Vanguard team will be transferred to other Remedy games, while the core team and some management will remain to define a new vision for Kestrel.
We’ve made great strides in developing Vanguard. After careful analysis, we came to the conclusion that taking a new direction where the game would lean more heavily on Remedy’s core competencies was the right decision. We are creating another unique Remedy game with the continued support of Tencent in a great co-op multiplayer experience.

The target platforms and release date for Kestrel are unknown. Vanguard’s budget was estimated at 30 million euros. It is also unclear whether the amount will change after the project is restarted in Kestrel.
