According to the remedial educationalist, Donald Duck meets all the characteristics of someone with a mild intellectual disability. “Donald Duck is friendly, enthusiastic, says exactly what he thinks, often doesn’t think well, has a short-term memory and is quickly thrown out at every job.”
Forty percent of young people in juvenile detention centers have a mild intellectual disability. That is why, according to Drost, measures must be taken to deal better with this group. For example, more knowledge about this group should be shared with the teacher training colleges, health clinics, general practitioners and district teams
. “The teacher training colleges, for example, could pay more attention to these kinds of behavioral problems. These children should receive tailor-made teaching programmes. If you are there earlier and match their own level, you can get a lot more done. If things get out of hand it all costs a lot more money and you have big problems.”
