At the start of the Tour of Lombardy, Remco Evenepoel only wanted to talk about the race itself, even when the Belgian media asked him some questions about his future. “It’s a race, and I’m especially happy about that,” said the world time trial champion.
The fuss surrounding the merger had not concerned Evenepoel last week. “That didn’t cross my mind and I was easily able to give it a place. It was therefore not difficult to keep the focus. I made Lombardy a goal and worked hard for two weeks. Normally I should be ready for this.”
However, the top talent did not prepare for altitude and mainly trained at home. “I spent a lot of time on the moped with my dad. I was able to relax for many moments. But we do want to win today. Not necessarily me, but the whole team. We have a lot of guys in good shape. Ilan Van Wilder and Andrea Bagioli won this week. We will show that our solidarity is greater than ever.”
Evenepoel remained mum about his future, which is mentioned at Soudal Quick-Step, Jumbo-Visma and INEOS Grenadiers. “I am now focusing on the race first, you will see the rest next week.”
