Remco Evenepoel crashed in the Giro d’Italia on Wednesday due to a stray dog. The Belgian seems to have escaped with a fright and is back on his bike.
The incident took place about 20 kilometers into the fifth stage. The dog walked along the road and did not move aside for the onrushing pack. Several riders had to swerve, causing Evenepoel to fall.
The Belgian contender for the overall victory landed on the asphalt, but a few minutes later gave his thumbs up towards the cameras from his bike. He seems to have had few complaints. It is unknown how the dog is doing.
Evenepoel won the opening time trial of the Giro on Saturday and rode in the pink leader’s jersey for three days. On Wednesday he lost the lead in the general classification to Andreas Leknessund. He is 28 seconds behind in the standings.
The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia is still in progress. The stage takes the peloton from Atripalda to Salerno. Two climbs of the third category are planned along the way.
