Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert declared themselves ready to seize another medal chance during the time trial of the world road cycling championships on Sunday in Stirling, Scotland.
“I haven’t trained much since Sunday and mostly rested well,” Wout van Aert told the press on Wednesday after his 2nd place behind Dutchman van der Poel on Sunday in the road race. “Sunday’s race was very tiring (271km), but I recovered quickly, from Monday, which surprised me. I don’t see the time as a revenge, but as a new chance to win”. Belgium is still looking for a first world title in the elite time trial.
Evenepoel finished 25th in the road race, but “Friday is another race,” said the man who gave up his rainbow jersey on Sunday. “I took two days to recover and trained today (Wednesday). It looks good. The course is very nice. It’s a long time, good for me. It suits me better than the course of last year. You will have to balance your efforts well because at the end there is a very difficult cobbled climb. Aerodynamics and power will be important in the first part of the course. It is very straight with turns fast. I hope I can make a difference.”
Wout van Aert also appreciates the uphill finish at the end of a 48.1km course. “It’s a little weird, but I think it’s good. There could have been a few more corners for me, to take advantage of the changes of pace, but I’m happy. If it rains, it won’t not a big difference. It’s a real journey for specialists.”
