Ten children with an infection with the corona virus were admitted to the AZ Damiaan in Ostend last week. It is not yet clear whether this is a worrying trend as a result of the omikron variant or a coincidence.

“It ranges from infants to young teenagers,” said spokesman Kevin Mollet. “That is rather striking, because we have not yet experienced such a peak, and because this has not been the case in other hospitals either. So we can say that the virus has surprised us again.”
The children are not seriously ill, but they all have respiratory problems. “We did not have to admit any child to intensive care, but hospitalization was necessary,” said Mollet. “It is not clear whether this is a coincidence, or whether it has to do with the omikron variant. That’s something the doctors have yet to investigate, but it’s a possibility.”
Most children have since been allowed to leave the hospital, there are currently three children with corona in AZ Damiaan.
