Remarkable outpouring of Peter Wright: ‘I am the poorest number one in the world’ | Darts

sport">The current world champion is not doing great at the moment. In the past four tournaments, the flamboyant Wright has already been knocked out after his first match. In the Premier League, an invitational tournament with the eight best darts players, Wright is currently fourth with 20 points and only the best four qualify for the play-offs. Gerwyn Price (18) and Joe Cullen (17) are therefore aiming for the spot of ‘Snakebite’, who only reached two finals this year – with one victory.

sport">“I want to win the Premier League and I still have a chance,” said the ambitious Wright. “If I go to the World Series in New York I would like to win that tournament and of course we have the World Cup of Darts next month. It’s all up for grabs. I therefore consciously canceled the Czech Darts Open. I wanted to take a break to give my arm some rest and also to recharge the batteries. I haven’t been doing very well lately. I needed a few days, because a busy period is coming.”

Pocket money from Jo

sport">On his way to the Premier League games in London, Wright gave a remarkable interview in The Telegraph† He called himself “probably the poorest number one ever.”

sport">“In 2007 I was watching the Grand Slam of Darts on TV,” said Wright, who worked as a laborer and dishwasher, among other things. “Back then I was still playing in local leagues, but I said to my wife Jo: ‘I can beat those guys, I can handle them’. She replied, ‘Well, then if you’re convinced, do it.’ And so I tried. But during my first season as a pro, I barely made £1200 (1415 euro, red.).”

sport">Wright thought about quitting several times, until he reached the World Cup final in 2014 at the age of 43. “That was because my wife and her father continued to support me,” it sounds. “I was ready to say goodbye to darts, because we had no money left. Jo didn’t know I had spent all our money, so I knew I had to get far before she found out. We didn’t even own a house at the moment and Jo was the only one who supported me financially. I used it to pay for my hotels, flights and registration fees. That’s why she still manages my finances now, because nine times out of ten I’m in the minus. I always buy those stupid things Amazon, which later turn out to be completely useless. I’m probably the poorest number one in the world. My prize money is deposited into my wife’s business account and I get pocket money from her. So Jo takes care of the business side for when I retire.”
