Remarkable Climate News: Sharp Decrease in F-Gas Emissions in 2022 – Report to EU

Each year, our country must report to the European Union on the amount of greenhouse gases it emits. The deadline for this is July 31. And this year there is remarkable climate news in those figures. Good climate news.

The environmental activist Thomas Goorden, one of the driving forces behind the resistance against the 3M factory in Zwijndrecht, dived into the provisional figures for 2022 that our country submitted. He pointed out on social media that F-gas emissions from the chemical industry have fallen sharply since 2020. Those fluorinated F-gases, HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) and CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) are extremely potent greenhouse gases. CFC emissions have been reduced by half, from 162 kilotons of CO₂ equivalents to 84 in 2022. And those of HFCs have even been reduced to less than a tenth, from 796 kilotons of CO₂ equivalents to 65.
