Remains Found on Melting Glacier in Austrian Alps: Possible Breakthrough in 20-Year-Old Cold Case

The remains of someone who has been missing for more than 20 years have probably been found on a melting glacier in the Austrian Alps.

The discovery was made on one of Austria’s fastest-melting glaciers. The melting of the ice allowed the body to surface more than two decades after it had been buried under the ice.

The body is believed to belong to a then 37-year-old Austrian man who died in 2001 on the Schlatenkees glacier, police say. The guide who made the discovery at an altitude of 2,900 meters also found a backpack with a bank card and a driver’s license.

DNA testing must show within a few weeks whether it is indeed that man.

Two months ago, a body was also found on Schlatenkees glacier. It is not yet clear who this belongs to, but according to the police, that person may have been hidden under the ice for decades.
