Rema 1000 Tops Price Test but Faces Controversy Over Sudden Price Hikes Amidst Grocery Market Manipulation Claims

Rema 1000 was the top winner of Nettavisen’s price test of over 100 items last weekend. The price test showed, among other things, a historically high price difference between the Rema 1000 and its rival, the Kiwi.

However, Nettavisen was able to reveal that the product that added to our Rema 1000 nomination as the cheapest store before the weekend has now become much more expensive. On Monday afternoon, Rema has 1,000 unusual sizes price increases up to 67 percent.

If that wasn’t enough, Kiwi also continued with its own price increases.

– As similar as possible

Kiwi was the most expensive light salted cod in Nettavisen’s price test before the weekend.

Then, according to Kiwi, the price was adjusted down on Friday. But the price was already set on Monday.

Norway’s self-setting price mechanism then increased the price from NOK 100 per package to NOK 149.50. Other goods were also greatly increased.

Kiwi explained that the price increases are due to the end of a campaign, while Rema 1000 and Extra have made corresponding changes.

– Since all the chains change their prices above we can imagine how they are doing. The goal is to always be as similar as possible on most items. So what the Norwegian Competition Authority was afraid of, said Bent Sofus Tranøy, professor of political science at Høgskolen i Innlandet and Høyskolen Kristiania.

In August Kiwis became the owner Norgesgruppen, Rema 1000 and Coop fined billions for illegal price collusion. At the same time, it was forbidden to systematically scan products in the stores of competitors.

Readers respond

The case has caused strong reactions among Nettavisen readers.

Good thing it’s not far to Strømstad, wrote a reader.

It’s amazing how the chains trick us with their fake prices. They push the prices all the time, but up! They are so fake that I almost looked at each other as dishonest, writes another reader.

It’s amazing how they hold up. They make a fortune from us, writing a third.

Many customers are expressing frustration and distrust towards the chains, which are now accused of manipulating prices and using their market power.

Others question how the big chains refuse price cooperation, but at the same time manage to beat “the ten rings”.

Damn tired of the shops

Wider dissatisfaction with the Norwegian grocery market is also being expressed, where some are taking drastic measures to avoid the big chains.

Aina Larsen Grude says she has started buying from local, independent shops and farm sales to avoid what she sees as the chains’ abuse of power:

– I’m sick of all the shops. It’s the same bloody goods, the same suppliers, and the selection is deadly, she writes.

Several practitioners suggest that the solution may lie in political measures, such as reducing customs barriers or introducing stricter regulations on food prices.

– The people of Norway are being deceived into being deceived, writes one reporter, and demands that the Storting and the government must take action.
