“Rema 1000 Launches New Mobile Payment Solution for Faster Shopping Experience”

Rema 1000 is launching a completely new payment solution in ten stores. The goal is to make shopping easier and faster.

See further down which Rema 1000 stores started with “scan and pay” today, Monday.

The new solution means that you scan the goods with your mobile while shopping:

  • First, open the Æ app.
  • Then press “start shopping trip”.
  • Then you scan the barcode on the item you put in the basket.
  • When you’re done, you pay with facial recognition on your mobile phone or a code.
  • You will then receive a QR code on the mobile you use to open the gate.

Nettavisens challenged the digital manager at Rema 1000 to see if the new solution is actually faster. It was not quite according to plan. See the result in the video above.

Do not remove the box

Rema 1000 says they are introducing mobile scanning to make it easier for customers.

– You use the app to see the price while it is shopping, and then you don’t have to stand in a queue, says head of digital customer experiences in Rema 1000, Øistein Burøy Olsen to Nettavisen.

– As a customer, I have to do the work of scanning the goods, isn’t that something the store should take care of?

– It is up to each individual customer. We still have regular boxes. So if you want to go to the till, you can still do so, says Olsen.

Queuing is very important

Researcher at Oslo Met, Dag Slettemeås, believes that “scan and pay” solutions are being introduced because it is believed to be good for both consumers and stores. Tempo is important.

– For the shops, it is important that the customers get through the shopping trip quickly without too much friction. Queuing at the checkout is something people have very little tolerance for, says Slettemeås.

– It doesn’t take long before people ask for more people to come to the checkout so that the queue is shorter. Solutions that allow people to avoid queuing are important, he believes.

Rejects austerity measures

Although “scan and pay” can make it more efficient, Rema 1000 denies that they are introducing the solution in order for the chain to save money.

– No, this is so that customers will find it even easier to shop in a Rema 1000 store, says Olsen in Rema 1000.

– Does this mean that staffing will be the same, i.e. that you are not doing this to be able to reduce staffing in the stores?

– Yes that is correct. Scan and pay is being launched to make the shopping trip easier, and not to reduce staffing in stores, he says.

More power to the shops

– It would look bad in the media if Rema 1000 said they did this to save money or to cut staffing. I don’t think they would say that anyway, says researcher Dag Slettemeås.

– At the same time, we probably have to believe them. If there are major staffing cuts, they will be caught up later, he says.

Loyalty is also important for the stores, believes Slettemeås.

– The stores have loyalty programmes, and when you also use your mobile phone to scan goods, it can increase loyalty, he says.

When customers shop with their mobile phones, it also gives stores important knowledge about consumers and shopping patterns.

– This gives the shops even more power. The more knowledge, the easier you can press the right buttons to get customers to shop more, says Slettemeås.

Loose weight and wastage

The vast majority of goods have a barcode. But in the fruit and vegetable department there are many who do not have it.

– We have placed scales outside the store, both for fruit and vegetables and for snacks. The customer weighs and prints out the barcode. The scales can be used by all customers, if you want to check the price while shopping, says Olsen.

– How are you going to prevent people from putting goods in the bag without scanning?

– We ask the customer a question at the end of the shopping trip: “Have you remembered everything”. We do this to help the customer if you have forgotten to buy something, but also if you have scanned all your items. In addition, the app takes a random check, in the same way as in a self-service checkout, he says.

Tested in Denmark

Rema 1000 also hopes that the new way of shopping will increase the chance that people will bring an environmentally friendly shopping net or a bag with them. You scan the item and put it straight into the bag.

– Why do you have so much faith in this?

– We have tested this in Denmark. They get very good feedback. We at Rema here in Norway have tried it out and think it is much easier, says Olsen.

According to Rema 1000, the feedback from the Danish customers has been very good. On a scale from 1 to 10, customers have given the payment solution 8.9.
