Reluctant to Rely on Russian Gas, European Union Implements This Strategy

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The European Union has launched a platform for countries in the group that will allow them to buy gas and LNG together. This is related to efforts to stop Europe’s dependence on Russian energy supplies.

Meanwhile, Russia’s attack on Ukraine which caused geopolitical tensions to heat up has made energy commodity prices soar. In addition, European countries have committed to no longer rely on Russian energy supplies as part of the sanctions imposed.

EU country leaders agreed on joint gas purchases at a summit last month, whose members including Spain and Greece have called for providing a buffer against potential supply disruptions. It should be noted that Russia supplies 40% of the EU’s gas.

The new platform will unify the energy demands of European countries and coordinate talks with major gas and LNG suppliers.

The platform will also support the purchase of hydrogen. This is in line with the European Union’s plans to move from fossil gas to low carbon gas in the future in order to meet its climate change goals.

This scheme is voluntary and countries are not obliged to take part. It aims to use the influence of the European Union.

Currently, the European Union’s gas stocks are only at the level of 26%. Meanwhile, the Blue Continent is negotiating a law that would require it to fill its storage to at least 80% of capacity this year and 90% per annum from 2023.
