We arrive at the legendary Monza circuit for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, the sixteenth of the Formula 1 World Championship, where the Ferrari drivers raced in black at home and one of them won.
It was a close podium against the McLarens (Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris), as well as a very annoyed Max Verstappen, not used to the lack of victories.
Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez (Red Bull), with six wins and 39 podiums in F1, started and finished in P8, while his teammate ‘Mad Max’, leader of the World Championship who sees Lando Norris getting ever closer, finished the race in sixth position.
Summary: Who won the 2024 Italian Grand Prix?
Charles Leclerc wins the 2024 Italian Grand Prix on a podium completed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
It was a race with many moves, the Red Bulls struggled to regain positions, McLaren regained the lead after losing it for several laps, but could not beat Ferrari.
This was also the first race for Argentine Franco Colapinto, who joined Williams to replace American Logan Sargeant and finished P12.
It was a bad weekend for George Russell (Mercedes) when young prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli crashed his car in free practice at Monza; despite this, he had a good qualifying and started from third place, but went off the track at the start and finished seventh.
This is how the top 10 looks on lap 53 of 53:

What happened to ‘Checo’ and Verstappen in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix?
‘Checo’, runner-up in the F1 world championship last year and seventh in the F1 world championship, said in Monza after qualifying that “the performance was poor” but “we have to minimize damage with both cars and score some good points.”
“I think this track magnifies our problems. I had a great run on used tyres in Q3, but then I put on new tyres and everything gets complicated, and we have to try to understand why this happens,” he said.
“I lost my last lap in Q3 and went a bit wide, I knew Max was coming from behind so I tried to give him a bit of a tow but it didn’t have much effect. It was a really poor set-up which I’m very upset about, as is the rest of the team,” he said.
“In any case, tomorrow is what matters and we have to keep the motivation high among the whole team, because we need a good race,” he said.
“I think that is where our strength lies, because the pace on long runs is good, so we have to try to minimise the damage to both cars and score some good points tomorrow,” said the Guadalajara native.
Verstappen said: “It was a bit of a mixed feeling in qualifying because in Q1 and Q2 (the first two rounds) we felt pretty good and set some competitive lap times during those sessions. In Q3 (the third and decisive one) we had problems with the balance and I had a lot of understeer compared to the previous attempts, so I couldn’t attack the corners properly.”
“This has never happened before, so I don’t understand why at the moment. We need to look into it and analyse it thoroughly for tomorrow,” said the Dutch star.
